Excursion (Alpine experience)

Sunday, September 24, 9:00-17:00

A trip to Planica and Tamar will be organized on Sunday. The trip will start at 9 am from Bled. The bus will take us to Planica (approximately 1-hour drive). Planica is a long, typical glacial valley in the northern part of the Slovenian Julian Alps. To the west it is surrounded by the Ponc ridge and to the east the Mojstrovka and Cipernik mountains rise above it. The upper part of Planica continues in Tamar, which is one of the most beautiful glacial valleys in the Slovenian Alps, at the end of which rises Mt. Jalovec in its impressive form.

From Planica we will make a one-hour walk (it's an easy walk) to Tamar. While walking, you can admire mountains and slopes of up to 2,500 m. The Tamar valley is also home of the Sava Dolinka River which springs from under the Ponce mountain crest as Nadiža Waterfall. Flowing down a rocky riverbed in the valley it soon disappears only to resurface again several hundred meters away as the emerald green Zelenci Lakes. At the end of the valley is Tamar Hut where we will have lunch. After lunch you can rest and enjoy the beautiful view.

After returning to Planica we will stop at the Nordic Centre Planica that is an exceptional environment for continuing the Slovenian tradition of ski jumping and flying, as well as for cross-country training and competing. First we will visit the Planica Museum where a heritage of the Slovenian winter sport history is stored. You will get to learn about the heroes of the world-class ski jumping elite, about the technical development of the jumping hill, the equipment used in different periods in history and more!

After the visit of the museum you can simply have a drink in the beautiful outdoor garden and enjoy beautiful sights of the Planica valley, jumping hill, cross-country course and the surrounding mountains from the viewing platform on the third floor.

You can also take a ride to the top of the largest jumping hill top by chairlift (one-way ticket would cost you 3 €, while you would pay 4 € for a return ticket). The ride takes about 7 minutes and there’s a small bar opened on the top.

If we will have time, we will stop at Zelenci natural reserve. The beautiful green lake is home to many endangered animal and plant species and also a spring of Sava Dolinka river. There is a short wooden path leading along one side of the lake and ending at a wooden tower from where you can enjoy the views on the mountains and the natural reserve area.
